Step 3: Create a Bill of Sale
For private automobile acquisitions in South Dakota, both the buyer and seller must sign a bill of sale. Form MV016 is the official South Dakota bill of sale, and it includes the following information:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA South Dakota) odometer disclosure standards, which affect some private car purchases in South Dakota, were revised in December 2020. Step 4: Change the title

Both the buyer and the seller must complete the applicable areas on the back of the title. This information contains the buyer's and seller's legal names, addresses, and signatures, as well as the date of the transaction and the odometer reading (if applicable).
